Thrilled with Cleveland music critic Kevin McLaughlin's review of "Oh, my son...": "...a searing meditation...the emotional summit of the evening...harrowing and deeply human...left the hall in silence, followed by heartfelt applause." rfr.bz/t804c9b

What do you do for fun? I was asked that question several times within a week. I had no answer but my work is so fun. Convicted! Along came a friend who invited me to a watercolor class for beginners.. What fun! Does anybody have any affordable ideas for a next adventure?🤔

The melody, lyrics & orchestration came to me in a dream. So powerful! “Baruch Ata: The One Who Comes” is a piece that ties the Old Testament Messiah w/ a New Testament understanding. SATB choir and string orchestra (or string quintet) with 2 winds, perc., harp, piano, & timp.

As I come to the finish line of two new pieces with a more commercial bent, I stumbled on this profound video. May the walls of musical prejudice, which go both ways, tumble down so we can all hold hands and join hearts. We’d all be better for the listen. rfr.bz/t6440ca

My clarinet teacher in college said that being a great musician requires three things: Be a great athlete, be a great philosopher, and have a sense of humor. To that end I took a Metaphysics course my senior year after completing my music requirements. Course was taught by the chair of USC’s philosophy school, did more for my mind than any class I took in college. Got me thinking about religion, purpose, meaning, all of which made me the musician I am now. Many fine musicians have the athletics and humor parts down, but precious few know how to think about music. The emotional side of music is worthwhile on its own, but there’s a world of thought above it you can’t reach without knowing how to get there. Pictured: Hoose Library at USC’s Mudd Hall of Philisophy. Wrote my exams here by hand.

"As a musical response to tragedy, Oh, my son… was harrowing and deeply human — a brave act of storytelling that left the hall in silence, followed by heartfelt applause." Kevin McLaughin, Cleveland Reviewer 💥Please SHARE & maybe save a life. rfr.bz/t4f5a1d

What an exciting concert of new compositions yesterday by esteemed members of the Nashville Composers Collective! The performers were top notch, & James Zimmermann performed my newest work, Three Miniatures for Solo Clarinet, like a true champion-musical, sensible, & energetic.

COMING SOON! The gripping “Oh, my son…” premiere vid “Most powerful & moving piece that I’ve heard in a long time..” D. Canfield, composer “Those words ‘it can’t be real’…for us it went on for days like, “no, that can’t be, he’s alive, he can’t be dead.’” W. Vollinger, composer

Sometimes, profit is small! Total profit from one recorded song played 112 times (34 countries): 93¢ for c. 100 hrs of composing. How much do football players earn from 1 game? Recording fees: $7-8,000. Still, a thrill to find this piece touched 34 countries! Foul play!

Been thinking lately about how writing a novel is just voluntarily entering a maze you’ve designed yourself, then complaining when you get lost. Still. I keep walking. There’s something waiting in the centre—I hope. #amwriting #WIP

Last Thursday pm, Juilliard hosted a Happy Hour-Nashville. I met a smiling jazz bassist, freelance violinist, actor/lawyer, soprano, & tenor. What a wonderful time discovering that Juilliard is alive in Nashville! Thanks for the awesome hors d'oeuvres, Juilliard! #juilliardalumni

The world premiere video of my composition about suicide is coming, but please be patient. GRAMMY®-winning producer, Erica Brenner, is hard at work creating a piece of art! Have heard and seen a working copy of it and it is stunning from sound to videography. But art takes time!
