Didn’t most people perceive Kerry as an out of touch liberal from Massachusetts? George W. Bush became the first non-incumbent Republican to win West Virginia partially because West Virginians didn’t trust Gore because of his energy policies.

@TheAleksee If Platner were campaigning in, say, California, I think his campaign would be dead on arrival. The state is too large and disconnected from its politicians. But Maine is full of ancestral democrat voters who like guns, hate the establishment, and are apathetic to Trump.
