Some of you may remember $SUCHIR on PumpFun that went to 18m, the coin about Suchir Balaji the OpenAI whistleblower who was assassinated and covered up as a suicide.
Well, I saw someone launch a coin on bags called $SUCHIR with 100% royalties going to @RaoPoornima Suchir’s mother, but the dev did nothing with it. I figured this is a good cause, so let me try to contact Suchir’s parents and see if they would be open to a fundraiser being held on Bags. We've officially fully onboarded his parents and so far $15,000 has been claimed by Poornima.
Who is Suchir Balaji?
Suchir Balaji (1998-2024), the only son of Poornima Ramarao and Balaji Ramamurthy, was a former researcher for OpenAI from 2018-2024 and UC Berkeley graduate. He helped lay the groundwork for the ChatGPT and other OpenAI products that we know today before he left OpenAI in 2024. After leaving, Suchir risked everything to expose the unethical practices used by OpenAI, notably the use of copyrighted material in the ChatGPT training data.
Suchir went to New York Times to voice his concerns about OpenAI and became a key witness in the landmark lawsuit against them. He even wrote an article on AI fair use which we can still see on his unfinished website suchir.net . Suchir was holding key evidence that could affect the AI industry as a whole, meaning he was a target.
Just days before his scheduled testimony to federal investigators, Suchir was found dead in his San Francisco apartment by gunshot. The death was ruled officially as a suicide, however the facts tell another story: ransacked apartment, signs of struggle, multiple pools of blood, a missing computer, a cremation before more investigation could be done.
Suchir is a martyr who died standing up against the unethical practices of the trillion dollar AI industry. His legacy and his truth must not be forgotten.
Who are Poornima Ramarao and Balaji Ramamurthy?
Poornima and Balaji are Suchir’s parents. They have appeared in numerous interviews and news articles bringing awareness of Suchir’s legacy, fighting for justice for his assassination, shedding light on the truth about the AI industry, and campaigning for the enhanced protection of all whistleblowers, all while grieving for their lost son.
The family has started 2 GoFundMe campaigns.
The first GoFundMe was created on December 26th 2024 by Poornima shortly after Suchir’s assassination in order to cover lawyers, legal fees, hiring investigators to continue looking into the crime, and to continue the fight for justice and the truth. The fight for justice is costly. Investigators can cost from $500-$800 an hour and they are expecting 100s of hours needed. Attorneys can cost $1000 to $1500 an hour while the legal battles are drawn out. No doubt the family has drained all of their savings. The second GoFundMe was started recently on July 29th by Balaji to fund the creation of Whistleblowers Tower. The tower would serve as a training and retreat center, a sanctuary for Truth-Tellers across the globe. This tower would act as a safe haven for any and all who are brave enough to speak out against injustice. Clearly the family has a strong motivation to support and protect any whistleblower, ensuring that what had happened to Suchir can never happen again. With the case growing colder and the costs of fighting for justice increasing by the day, the Balaji family needs our help. With the advent of @BagsApp by @finnbags, it’s now possible to directly support the Balaji family just by trading like we always do.
