BREAKING NEWS:
THE BRITISH ARE SAYING toodle-oo. British warships will no longer join the US on its China coast intimidation runs, it was revealed today.
The Armed Forces will “reduce the number of overseas training exercises” to stay closer to home, said Al Carns of the Ministry of Defence, according to a report today in UK Defence News.
“Over the next four years, the Royal Navy will scale back its participation in overseas training outside the Europe, Atlantic, and Arctic theatre,” Carns said.
Europe, Atlantic, and Arctic? In other words, the China beat is off the list.
.
THE BULLY BEAT
Up to now, the standard operating technique was for the UK to join the US in regularly sailing warships along China’s coast or near Japan for "exercises" or what they called “freedom of navigation” runs—while simultaneously identifying any Chinese ships anywhere, including dismantled in Chinese dockyards, as “clear evidence of aggression”.
The MOD man said the British army was withdrawing from a wider global presence from financial year 2026 onwards “to enable a greater focus on NATO commitments and enhancing land war-fighting capabilities”—but he may just have been trying to make a cost-cutting exercise sound good.
.
STRUTTING THEIR STUFF
As recently as September, the UK Carrier Strike Group led by HMS Prince of Wales was strutting along in a massive scary convoy along the coast of China.
Just weeks earlier, the UK's HMS Richmond sailed alongside the U.S. destroyer USS Higgins through the waters between the Chinese mainland and the island of Taiwan.
(The US has warned the world that China is on the verge of "invading" Taiwan for forty years.)
The bizarre element is that both UK and US recognize Taiwan as being legally a province of Mainland China, but Washington’s military strategy needs to maximize tensions in the area as part of its “first island chain” plan to limit the Chinese to an extremely narrow strip of sea.
.
'OPERATIONAL NEEDS'
But the UK may not be backing off for ever. Carns said that it will still prioritise overseas activity “in alignment with both our own and partners’ operational needs". So if the US did attack China, the UK could pile in too.
That may yet happen. The US National Security Strategy, published last week by the Department of War, calls for raised spending on militarization of islands along the coast of China.
The US's hard-drinking War Chief Pete Hegseth says the military build-up on the coast is there "to promote peace".
Which is exactly what the US said in 1989 before it invaded Panama.
