The only power in the game who can positively influence the 2034 World Cup in Saudi Arabia are the players. Fifa is so in thrall to Saudi wealth it will do anything and ignore anything. The FA is too meek. The fans have a conscience and an individual and collective voice but won’t be listened to by Fifa. European leagues could make a stand for their own reasons, namely a winter World Cup disrupting their schedules, but there is plenty of Saudi influence/money in these leagues. The players have the power, and the legitimate anger over scheduling and workload (already a battle with Fifa). Will they now show solidarity with the concerns voiced by more than 100 leading women’s players over Fifa’s Aramco deal? Will there be a split between those earning fortunes in the Saudi Pro League (Ronaldo etc) and those concerned by issues there (as the Germans were with Qatar)? Everything tends to come down to money and players love the World Cup but it would be impressive if the players, the stars of the show and increasingly militant on other matters, spoke out on human rights via @PFA and @FIFPRO and sought to drive more change in the Saudis’ Vision 2030.
