Oeps, daar gaat weer een klassiek islamitisch sprookje. Die ‘University of al-Qarawiyyin’ uit 859 was géén universiteit zoals Bologna (1088), Oxford of Parijs. Het was een madrasa bij een moskee: een islamitische koranschool gericht op religieus onderwijs, fiqh en theologie. Pas in de 20e eeuw is het omgebouwd tot een echte staatsuniversiteit. De eerste échte universiteiten (met faculteiten, graden, autonome structuur en wetenschappelijke vrijheid) ontstonden in middeleeuws christelijk Europa. En nee, ‘jouw beschaving bestond nog niet’ is ookpure onzin. West-Europa had toen al de Karolingische renaissance, kloosterscholen, kathedralen en bouwde voort op Grieks-Romeinse kennis. De Islamic Golden Age bestond vooral uit het vertalen van Griekse, Perzische en Indiase werken (vaak door christenen en joden onder islamitisch bewind). Veel ‘moslim’ geleerden waren Perzen, geen Arabieren, en vaak recent bekeerd. Zodra de orthodoxie (denk Al-Ghazali) de overhand kreeg en ‘bidden tot Allah’ belangrijker werd dan ‘denk’, ging het licht uit. De wetenschappelijke revolutie en moderne universiteiten kwamen uit christelijk/secular Europa. Dus bespaar ons dat ‘wij hadden al universiteiten’ verhaaltje. Het is historisch cherry-picken om de huidige realiteit te verhullen.
