The point is that in places like the Soviet or NK, that divide is built into the system and cannot be challenged. The elections aren’t real, opposition isn’t allowed, and you can’t change the power. In a democracy, elites exist too but they’re still subject to being voted out, challenged in court, exposed by media, and protested against. It’s permanent and unchallengeable vs imperfect but contestable

There isn’t some % threshold where a system suddenly becomes totalitarian. Totalitarianism is about structure. By your definition basically every country in history is totalitarian, which makes the term useless. Democracies are judged by whether people can vote, organize, protest, and replace leadership, even if imperfectly. Totalitarian systems don’t allow that at all.

Totalitarianism isn’t a government doing bad things… It’s a system where the state controls political power, speech, opposition, media, and civil life. Where citizens have ZERO ability to challenge it. Israel allows people to criticize it publicly, protest against it, vote against their leaders, organize politically. That’s NOT totalitarianism.
