Western guides on the same trip make $30,000 to $50,000. Back home, farm income in their villages averages $500 a year, which is why so many of them keep coming back. 42 mountain workers have died on Everest in the past ten years. Mountains kill people. Everest is the one that takes your money first, hands you a guide and an oxygen tank, and points you past a body count on the way up.
