An undeniable truth that I think both Superman and Wonder Woman filmmakers need to accept is that while these figures are symbols and represent very relevant things, they’re also characters. And with them being characters they should be treated with the same multifaceted writing you’d give to a human character like Batman and Spider-Man. These are characters with flaws and self contradictions at their very core, and you shouldn’t be afraid of showing that even if it does challenge their symbol. You can’t just write Superman as one thing. Yeah while it’s way worse to write him as an all mythic like figure who aura farms, it can also be detrimental to solely represent him as just a chill farmer guy who happens to have powers. It’s that collision of myth and man that most of his best stories (All Star, For The Man Who Has Everything, Birthright, Whatever Happened To The Man of Tomorrow, Smashes The Klan, Smallville) are derived from. It’s those two halves that just makes for a more compelling character. The exact same thing can be said about Wonder Woman. Yeah if you just showcase her as a benevolent pacifist you’d be on a much better page than just depicting her as a bloodthirsty warrior, but then you’re also missing a lot of her dimensionality. The push and pull between peace and violence, knowing when to ball your fist and reach out your hand. The desire to fix man’s world but oftentimes engage in its shortcomings. If you actually allow these characters to be complicated instead of just caricatures, I think that’ll give them much more longevity in their adaptations.
