@EngineerOnAuto @SawyerMerritt A consistent, always exactly on point uber driver with no BO and exactly your musical tastes who never harasses you. A perfectly clean very luxe car. The correctness is a bit of a hinderance in pick up and dropoff which might be a bit further away.

NEWS: Starting today, Waymo is now serving its first public riders on their fully autonomous ride-hailing service in four new cities: Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, and Orlando. "This marks the first time we’ve opened to the public in multiple cities simultaneously, this brings our total commercial metro areas to 10, and deepens our commitment in the states of Texas and Florida."

@Noahpinion Europeans indisputably stole their rocks. Often put in place a bureaucracy of rock stealing as well. You could argue that countries have done better by not focusing on stolen rocks but recent experience of MAGA resentment shows the temptation is not limited to anti-racists.

A lot of "anti-racist" writers turn to third-worldism -- the idea that countries in Africa and South Asia are poor because Europeans stole their rocks -- because they see it as the only alternative to racism. Ha-Joon Chang presents a different alternative: developmentalism.
Noah Smith 🐇🇺🇸🇺🇦🇹🇼@Noahpinion

Ha-Joon Chang is the most important, thoughtful, novel anti-racist thinker alive in the world today. frontline.thehindu.com/interviews/ind…

@Noahpinion Republicans love America as it was, which is why MAGA worked so well. It also distinguishes them from Democrats who love what America can be. But neither loves America as it is. This is because America is fundamentally focused on change makers and change making.

Republicans, on the other hand, have a firmer, more fixed belief about what America is. It's not probationary, provisional, or conditional. No matter what happens in the news, they keep believing that America is the thing they believe it to be -- and which they claim to love

This is the difference, right here. Both Republicans and Democrats love (or hate) an idea of what America is. But for too many Democrats, that idea is conditional -- events in the news can change their basic beliefs about what America truly "is".
Steve Kerins@SteveKerins

@Noahpinion @CameronCorduroy I think that, for non-MAGA people, it turned out that the country wasn't what we thought it was. But for them, they were right. I mean, I do love America, but... more the version in my head than the one on the ground, and maybe with different people.

Someone asked me why there aren't any high-end Chinese clothing brands. They are many! In this thread, I'll name a few, as well as answer the question why you may not have heard of them. 🧵

@mattyglesias Not eating the oil is definitely better for you, the non-intuitive part of this business is that people thought that seed oils would be marginally better for you than animal fat, but it turns out they're marginally worse.

@Noahpinion Gifted and talented was not supposed to be about conventionally smart kids (who get positive feedback in class), it was supposed to be for the kids who were not doing well in class because they were bored.

@Noahpinion Then it became about just more fun stuff for smart kids, because finding truly gifted and talented kids was subjective and hard.

Not sure who will win this election. But one thing I am sure of is that I don't think like a swing voter, and neither does anyone else who spends a lot of time talking about politics on this site. Our ability to predict their reactions to, say, the Bret Baier interview, is nil.

The idea that you can just cite someone else's paper to say anything you want, and then when people point out that it doesn't actually say what you claimed, you can just shrug and say "Well who has time to actually READ all those papers?", is just incredible.

@asymmetricinfo How do you feel about steep tickets + random infrequent enforcement for freeriding on public transit? It seems similar. He (probably) does a lot of this nonsense, this time he got convicted.

This is basically my position. Georgia case looks strong, Fani Willis’ appalling judgement notwithstanding, and federal cases are legit. But the NY cases look like motivated prosecutions and that’s bad even if you loathe Trump, as I do, and support his opponent, as I do.
Sarah Isgur@whignewtons

Before you dismiss the folks criticizing this prosecution, this is the best articulation of the norm that they believe was broken. It is the problem with *this* case. It’s not the same for the two federal cases or the Georgia case.

@ModeledBehavior That you stretch is more important than when. Do it when you can. Stretching before running is slightly bad for performance, supposedly rolling is better probably doesn't matter unless you really care about performance. Warm up a bit before stretching, so after run works well.

@whstancil Fuck you, Biden has actually been an amazingly effective and successful president, and has done more for progressive causes and the environment than any of the other dem candidates. The fact that Trump is an asshole as well as a worse president shouldn't obscure that.

one reason biden is sunk is that 95% of you are utter moral cowards who are so afraid being deemed uncool by your internet friends that you can't find it in yourself to choke out the admission that maybe trump is worse and voting against biden is really dangerous

Washington Post: “After affirmative action, a White teen’s Ivy hopes rose. A Black teen’s sank.” Black aspiring senator realizes “Harvard is out” the moment he hears affirmative action is banned. White kid has a perfect ACT and 4.4 GPA, black kid has worse grades and 85th percentile ACT.
