The gross profit on a pint is >50%. Most pubs' problem is they don't sell enough of them.

@NicholasTyrone The UK gov has a major procurement problem. There's huge regulatory overburden, which in turn leads to reliance on hiring consultants. As a result everything takes much longer and costs much more than it should.

And hard to argue that trying to squeeze further tax out of the British people will not have real political consequences - or may not even be technically possible, given Laffer curve effects. We need to cut public spending - doing so will not be pretty, however.

On a more serious note, today's small-boats announcement from Reform perfectly frames their strategic problem. What was required when they topped the polls was a demonstration they could find practical solutions, not just identify problems. And they are incapable of doing that.

My fear is not that you’d try to do this, should you ever have the opportunity, it’s that the last thing the nation wants or needs are yet more promises that will not survive contact with legal, operational or practical reality. This may be a catchy headline that you deploy to distract from other issues, but it will fail as a policy, and fail badly.
