the weight of the moment settling between them. the almost-smile that tried to surface never quite made it; instead, his gaze stayed fixed on her——sharp enough to catch any wobble in the façade, soft enough not to corner her. “ really? ”

“and… i don’t even know where to start. long story. messy story.” he exhaled softly, eyes lifting to hers with a sincerity he finally had access to again. “how’ve you been?”
