As an expert in the neuroscience of conflict and as one who speaks from the field of practice in peacebuilding, Mari has the following to say in her book: academic.oup.com/book/39487 “My main intellectual interest was in trying to understand why some people in Northern Ireland who had initially chosen to use violence to address the conflict, some of whom had been jailed, eventually abandoned such a strategy in favour of dialogue efforts [...]. I discovered that very few of these people had been talked or reasoned out of their support for violence. By far, the majority who had changed were those whose minds and behaviours had been transformed through experiences that had subsequently created emotional and instinctual changes for them”.
