@messina_jp I find myself constantly rolling my eyes at how much blatant AI-produced content I see on these platforms. Or, as an offending posts might sign off with: "It's not content. It's slop."

The paper is a part of a special issue dedicated to Nozick's ASU. I take the inspiration of my main thesis from Nozick's discussion of self-esteem.

I've got a new paper out arguing that an economy dedicated to the value of community will likely generate status competition. This is a problem if the value of community is grounded in a claim of equal esteem or recognition. tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.108…

So, if you are a political theorist who can credibly teach Intro to American Politics and are interested in a teaching position in a very cool college town, this is a good job for you to apply to. Feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions. 3/3

I should note that, while we mainly need people to teach Introduction to American Politics, the position is open to political theorists and allows for teaching political theory courses. 2/3

@Kpourvand In the section on crude communism in the 1844 manuscripts, Marx explains why a raising of wages would not solve the problem of alienation. Roughly, the issue is still you are working for the sake of a wage.

I am teaching Marx at the moment. I think his account of alienation remains by far the most enduring element of his thought. Not sure though how much, even on his account, alienation stems from capitalism per se, so much as just poverty.

@wtfis2bdone @JKandiyali The paper is more modest than that. I focus on some recent arguments that have become popular in the literature and try to show why they are invalid. If this means radicals have other arguments, fine with me! An alternative frame for my paper could be: tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10…

@matthenryyoung I guess I’m getting blocked by someone but Theory of Justice is the natural choice. An alternative I like is to pick a book recently published you want to read that you think might work with undergraduates. I’ve done that a few times and thought it worked out.

Political theory friends: I'm not content with my Intro to Theory syllabus. The backbone of the class is sustained engagement with Plato's Gorgias, Leviathan, and the Second Treatise. The contemporary section feels scattered in comparison. What would be a good anchor text to use?

@ZoltnGborSzcs1 That seems reasonable. Though, I think it is valuable to distinguish the question of what a person's legal obligations are and the question of the duty to obey the law, whether or not the latter issue is called "political obligation."

@hpfrye I'm not wholly unfamiliar with the literature and still think that it makes little (if any) sense to maintain a difference between political and legal obligation if political obligation is the duty to obey the law.

Seems like an interesting paper. A minor remark: if political obligation is merely the duty to obey the law then it is a misnomer to call it political obligation instead of legal obligation. Calling it political merely muds the water.
Harrison Frye@hpfrye

I have a new paper at Res Publica arguing that a belief in political obligation may function in certain contexts to advance effective governance, even if such a belief is a false belief. link.springer.com/article/10.100…
