@allenholub I like the idea of a scheduled Cool Down period in Basecamp’s Shape Up process. The real value is in reserving time specifically for slack. By setting aside time intentionally—even just to pause—you protect that space from being overtaken by other tasks. #cool-down" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">basecamp.com/shapeup/2.2-ch…

My overall goal in production is a smooth, predictable, product development flow. Once a story is accepted into (the very small, limited slot) backlog, you have strong odds that a solution will predictably emerge within a "usual" time frame. If the stories are back to back, you have no time to handle emergencies, deal with unexpectedly challenging implementation issues, &c. Slack time takes up the slack. If something unpredictable comes along, you can sacrifice some slack time to handle it. Short cycle times, of course, get things out the door faster and are also important. The slack time (which is a percentage) gets things out the door smoother. You need both.

No law says that a team must immediately start on the next story after finishing the previous one. In fact, it's essential to have planned slack time in your schedule to get a smooth product-development flow. Depending on variability (e.g., how many emergencies pop up or surprises you find as you make changes), you'll need between 30% and 50% slack. The more variability, the more slack you need. Fill that time with things like learning and personal projects. Break out of the badly-done-Sprint death march.

Hey @X can I just get a “no politics” button? I’m only on this platform for tech info. Fighting your algorithm sucks.

What I really miss in Java is named optional method arguments. This would eliminate the whole builder pattern (just like records helped to get rid of getters / setters). Is there a JEP for that?

Maven central is a shared resource. Hosted thanks to the generosity of @sonatype (though we do have disaster recovery plans if they cannot continue to host) Be responsible. Use a repository manager people. Especially if you’re in the 1% of top consumers. sonatype.com/blog/maven-cen…

@gunnarmorling If your carrier supports eSIM and your phone is backed up to the cloud, setting up a new phone while traveling abroad shouldn’t be a problem. Same goes for computers. Don't forget to pack an extra pair of glasses, though. They're hard to replace on the go! 😊 #TravelTips

Question for my traveller friends: do you bring a backup phone on your trips? Would love to learn about your strategies for your "personal business continuity" in case of loss, theft, etc. 🤓.

I regret to share that I’ve been told that Dr. Alex Blewitt (@alblue) has passed away. He is succeeded by his wife Amy (@lemonpod) and their two children. Alex was a @Java_Champions, a contributor for @InfoQ , a legendary engineer, and a generous soul. RIP, Alex.

Big companies use boring tech too. Blocking API, monolith, relational databases, SQL. New things are tried, but they don't always become the norm. twitter.com/rafaelcodes/st…

What many sw engineers don't realize: The majority of jobs do not hire you to write the highest quality code or produce the cleanest architecture. They hire you to solve their business problems very efficiently. Sometimes this means high-quality code. Sometimes not at all.
