Defended my Ph.D. at Emory yesterday! This project was built from many long days in the archives, studying how non-state actors shaped colonial governance. Extremely grateful to all at @EmoryPolisci. Very excited to be joining @psupolisci as an Assistant Professor this fall!

New paper at AJPS: "The limits of AI for authoritarian control." The more repression there is, the less information exists in AI's training data, and the worse the AI performs. Ironically, data from democracies can help improve repressive AI.

Citizens and Democratic Backsliding This book by Wunsch argues that “a lack of consolidation around liberal democratic norms within the population explains why citizens often fail to punish backsliding leaders decisively at the ballot box.” Open Access: academic.oup.com/book/60927

In December 2022, Chinese official propaganda on COVID policy made a sharp U-turn. How did these contradictory messages from the policy shift impact citizens’ perceptions? We find "soft" ones lost persuasiveness while "hard" ones more strongly deterred protests. @PSRMJournal

Thrilled to see our work out in Journal of Politics! We theorize how autocrats use redistributive messaging to claim democratic legitimacy—and show it can shape public opinion. Grateful for the journey with @eddySFYeung and the support we received throughout.

Yumin (@hsuyumin) and I are excited to share our new paper at @The_JOP! In this paper, we theorize and test the logic of “redistributionist propaganda”—state messaging boasting about redistributive efforts of the regime. 1/ 📰 doi.org/10.1086/734238

After five years from the first draft, my job market paper is finally forthcoming @World_Pol. I greatly appreciate all who helped and commented. I hope it offers something to those interested in transparency, institution development, authoritarianism, or contentious politics.

🚨Why do masses support democratic backsliding?🚨 A new @AJPS_Editor paper with Yotam Margalit, @LiorSheffer and @ItamarYakir explores this question in the Israeli context. Our findings emphasize the role of leader attachment and affective polarization. doi.org/10.1111/ajps.1…
