@IndianaBranch @LewisCassSOL @ReadingLeagueIN So sorry I missed the last zoom meeting tonight. It completely skipped my mind. (our AC is out at our house and it's almost 90 in here) Might've been the heat LOL
English

If you want PGPs for Part 3 of the #BookStudy of The Knowledge Gap complete the survey identifying 2 takeaways. Go to shorturl.at/fqQWZ @LewisCassSOL @ReadingLeagueIN #PatinsIcam @IndianaBranch #KnowledgeGap

English

@IndianaBranch @ReadingLeagueIN P3Q5: This book has really made me think about how I teach. I see a lot of changes coming in my classroom next year. Rich content, writing instruction and building a deep vocab. Thank you Knowledge Gap! @LewisCassSOL @ReadingLeagueIN @IndianaBranch
English

P3 Q5: Have your views changed as a result of reading the book? Did anything surprise you? Were you left w/a sense of optimism? What can you do?
#PatinsICam @ReadingLeagueIN @IndianaBranch #KnowledgeGap #BookStudy

English

@IndianaBranch @ReadingLeagueIN P3Q4: Yes! Conventions to writing should be last. I feel that kids should be allowed to just write. I loved how Hochman showed us how to coax writers into adding more to their work. Writing will show knowledge & understanding. @LewisCassSOL @IndianaBranch @ReadingLeagueIN
English

P3 Q4: Should children be encouraged to write at length about their own experiences and develop their “voice” without worrying much about the conventions of written language? #PatinsICam @ReadingLeagueIN @IndianaBranch #KnowledgeGap #BookStudy

English

@IndianaBranch @ReadingLeagueIN P3Q3: I disagree: I feel reading is one of the biggest ways to gain knowledge and vocab. Our nonreaders need text to speech so they get the same info. KGap has taught me that you must give kids rich text even if it is hard for them. @LewisCassSOL @IndianaBranch @ReadingLeagueIN
English

P3 Q3: Do you agree w/Wexler who quotes Wolters, “...For a child who is gaining the skills of literacy, it [reading] is a completely inefficient way for them to gain knowledge & vocab.” Why/Why not? #PatinsICam @ReadingLeagueIN @IndianaBranch #KnowledgeGap #BookStudy

English

@IndianaBranch @ReadingLeagueIN P3Q2: Close reading allowed students to be on a level playing field. Low readers and EL students were able to grab information from hard text & make connections w/out guidance. The "try it" without support is hard for teachers. @LewisCassSOL @ReadingLeagueIN @IndianaBranch
English

P3 Q2: Ts in Reno’s Core Task Project began w/close reading of complex text, not knowledge building. Why & how did they benefit? #PatinsIcam @ReadingLeagueIN @IndianaBranch #KnowledgeGap #BookStudy

English

@IndianaBranch @ReadingLeagueIN P3Q1: I believed the misconception of "what students should know & be able to do". I did not know about the 3 shifts: practice complex text, ideas need evidence, and use content rich nonfiction text. But it all makes sense. @LewisCassSOL @ReadingLeagueIN @IndianaBranch
English

P3 Q1: “Perhaps the most widespread misconception about the Common Core is that it requires specific content.” Did you share this misconception?
#PatinsIcam @ReadingLeagueIN @IndianaBranch #KnowledgeGap #BookStudy

English

@IndianaBranch @ReadingLeagueIN P2Q5: State standards should be a guide for teachers in ensure they are teaching all of the materials needed. I use standards to create IEP goals for students to progress on and to progress monitor them @LewisCassSOL @ReadingLeagueIN @IndianaBranch
English

P2 Q5: Many education reformers have pinned their hopes on national or state standards. How have you used these to shape your practice?
#PatinsIcam @ReadingLeagueIN @IndianaBranch #KnowledgeGap #BookStudy

English

@IndianaBranch @ReadingLeagueIN P2Q4:Hirsch is correct in his approach. Minority and low income students can bring such a different perspective to the classroom and add to deep discussion and knowledge to the elite that aren’t subjected to that lifestyle @LewisCassSOL @ReadingLeagueIN @IndianaBranch
English

P2 Q4: Hirsch’s goal was to provide disadvantaged Ss w/access to materials that are afforded to the elite, whatever they might be...Do you believe this is an important approach? Why/Why Not? #PatinsIcam @ReadingLeagueIN @IndianaBranch #KnowledgeGap #BookStudy

English

@IndianaBranch @ReadingLeagueIN P2Q3:Cultural Literacy was an interesting topic to read about. In my area all children are given the same materials & I feel like diversity drives our instruction so that everyone can gain knowledge and make a connection to it. @LewisCassSOL @ReadingLeagueIN @IndianaBranch
English

P2 Q3: How have theories from the past influenced current approaches to ed? How do these ideas impact children from a range of socioeconomic backgrounds?
#PatinsIcam @ReadingLeagueIN @IndianaBranch #KnowledgeGap #BookStudy

English

@IndianaBranch @ReadingLeagueIN P2Q2: As a P - no to standards. As a T they are a guideline of skills that need to be taught and mastered- KG has taught me to use rich instruction to guide the kids to understand the skills BUT NOT in isolation. @LewisCassSOL @ReadingLeagueIN #PatinsIcam @IndianaBranch
English

P2 Q2: Are standards helpful to you as a parent? Do you understand them as a Teacher? What do they mean for classroom instruction?
#PatinsIcam @ReadingLeagueIN @IndianaBranch #KnowledgeGap #BookStudy

English

@IndianaBranch @ReadingLeagueIN P2A1: Merge all 3 P/C/KB theories: to make student gains. Make things hands on like P, making students active participants like C and giving them rich content like KB is the perfect classroom/learning scenerio. @LewisCassSOL @ReadingLeagueIN @IndianaBranch #Knowledge Gap
English

P2 Q1: Do you see areas of possible agreement b/t progressive or constructivist educators & those who advocate for knowledge-building curriculum? How do you think these groups can work together? #PatinsIcam @ReadingLeagueIN @IndianaBranch #KnowledgeGap #BookStudy

English

@IndianaBranch @ReadingLeagueIN P1Q5: Shifting to knowledge based teaching will allow low income students to be on the same playing field as all of the other students. A dynamic teacher who will give that "extra" to their classroom will see improved outcomes. @LewisCassSOL @ReadingLeagueIN @IndianaBranch
English

P1 Q5: Ed reforms initially concluded teacher quality was the key to improving outcomes for low-income Ss. How & why have perspectives shifted?
#PatinsIcam @ReadingLeagueIN @IndianaBranch #KnowledgeGap #BookStudy

English

@IndianaBranch @ReadingLeagueIN P1A4: Elementary is the foundation. If you make us responsible for the what to teach and how to teach it - you are just asking us to fail. Curriculum maps and relevant PD for our content areas are a must. @LewisCassSOL @ReadingLeagueIN #PatinsIcam @IndianaBranch #KnowledgeGap
English

P1 Q4: What is meant by “...what the vast majority of educators, reformers, commentators, & gov't officials still haven’t realized is that elementary is where the real problem has been hiding...” #PatinsIcam @ReadingLeagueIN @IndianaBranch #KnowledgeGap #BookStudy

English

@IndianaBranch @ReadingLeagueIN P1Q3: Yes, familiarity will help with comprehension.
BUT No, I don't feel like familiarity depends on comprehension. Knowledge of new materials is a must to grow your vocabulary and your tool box for future references. @LewisCassSOL @ReadingLeagueIN #PatinsIcam @IndianaBranch
English

P1 Q3: According to @DanielWillingham, problems in comprehension arise b/c “authors inevitably leave out information.” Does comprehension depend on familiarity with the topic? Why? #PatinsIcam @ReadingLeagueIN @IndianaBranch #KnowledgeGap #BookStudy

English

@IndianaBranch @ReadingLeagueIN Part 1 A2: Ms. Masi's classroom for sure! I love how she introduces her vocabulary with arm gestures. She also does so much story prep with the kids before actually diving into the story. @LewisCassSOL @ReadingLeagueIN #PatinsIcam @IndianaBranch #KnowledgeGap #BookStudy
English

P1 Q2: As Ps, Ts or Ss, which of the classrooms described in the book so far would you prefer? Why?
#PatinsIcam @ReadingLeagueIN @IndianaBranch #KnowledgeGap #BookStudy

English

@IndianaBranch @ReadingLeagueIN Part 1 A 1: This book was recommended as a summer book study. I felt the term "knowledge gap" was going to be about how standardized testing doesn't show a child's true knowledge.
@LewisCassSOL @ReadingLeagueIN #PatinsIcam @IndianaBranch #KnowledgeGap #BookStudy
English

Q1: Why did you find yourself drawn to this book? What did you think the term “knowledge gap” would refer to? #PatinsIcam @ReadingLeagueIN @IndianaBranch #KnowledgeGap #BookStudy
