This week’s main story is about Hawaii, the various groups making it harder and harder to live there, and why we all have to stop mailing them rocks. Seriously. You’ll see.

Today is National Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples (MMIP) Awareness Day, also known as Red Dress Day. This date was chosen to honor the life of Hanna Harris (Northern Cheyenne), who was murdered in July 2013 and would have turned 32 today. “This is a day to honor the women, girls, and LGBTQ+ people affected by the genocide that’s been ongoing since 1492,” said journalist and activist Brandi Morin. And for her, it’s impossible to separate gender-based violence from the environment—and the fight for a healthier planet. “This violence is intrinsically connected to the land. Survivors are on the forefront of the fight for the land, because they know what it’s like not to give consent.” 🎥 Directed by @bmorinstories, shot/edited by @geordieday in partnership with @themeteor. You can take action by using @niwrc’s pre-written letter to urge your reps to pass the Parity for Tribal Law Enforcement Act and supporting and following creators ⬇️ @bmorinstories @illuminative @mmiwhoismissing @niwrc @ndncollective @rising_hearts @seedingsovereignty @sovereignbodies @strongheartsdv @wernative No more stolen sisters! #RedDressDay #MMIW #MMIP #NoMoreStolenSisters

❤️ Today, we commemorate the defeat of captain cook, the colonizer who was killed by Kānaka Maoli relatives on this day in 1779. This happened after his third intrusive visit to the Ka Pae ʻĀina o Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian Islands). ❤️ Thread ⬇️

I always think how people reacted to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. There was a global boycott to Russia. The world used to cherish the fact the Ukraine was defending its country. Yet, Palestinian defending their land resisting occupation are labeled as terrorists.

DEI statements really are not for minoritized ppl, literally the way Iʻm contributing to DEI is just being me and for me that happens to incl some DEI-type work but that 100% shouldnʻt be an expectation for minoritized ppl but this prompt very hints it is

Doing a DEI statement for an app and ugh bc I literally am the "diversity" bc of the boxes I check but that doesnʻt feel like enough (500 word essay 🥲) but then when I start saying "thereʻs more" then THAT feels problematic bc minoritized ppl shouldnʻt have to be doing more

131 years of persistence through the military occupation 131 years of resistance against the lustful greed of empire 131 years of repeating again and again "We are not American. We will die as Hawaiians we will never be American!" 131 years of Onipaʻa

But when I found out the author wasn't Hawaiian it started to read different, more like the ppl who are "Hawaiian at heart" which is a very different situation imo

Also the story explicitly deals with the issue of not looking "Hawaiian enough" which as a light skinned mixed person resonated when I read it thinking the author was Hawaiian

I literally saw Hula on two lists today of Indigenous/Pasifika authored books, it's so frustrating fully no shade to the ppl who had it on those lists, the marketing is 100% misleading and it shouldn't need to be a full research project just to share Indigenous written books 🧵
ren kanoelani 🌿🍉🌊@renmaicha

Learning that the author of Hula, Jasmin Iolani Hakes, is not kanaka + the combination of her not being explicit about it and having a Hawaiian middle name she uses as an author… bad taste in my mouth personally.

Hey #SICB2024 👋🏼 come check out my poster tomorrow (Wednesday) at 3:30 and hear about some cute lil endemic Hawaiian marine snails 🐌 (disclaimer they only come in black irl but they're still cute 🥺)

I wanted to try drawing my summer research species and had some fun with colors along the way Both species can be called pipipi in ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi. The spotted guy is Neripteron neglectum and the stripey dude is Nerita picea
