The flag currently used by the new Syrian government became increasingly used by anti-Assad protestors as the government's abuses and crimes against humanity made it clear that reform from within was impossible. The regime needed to be overthrown.

At that time, it was still common to see anti-Assad regime protestors using the flag we now associate with the Ba'athist era. This was intended by protestors to show that their loyalty was to Syria even while criticizing its government.

On this day in 2011, thousands of people all over Syria came out to protest in the "Friday of Resistance," rejecting Assad's vague promises of reform. Kurds in Eastern Syria joined the protests, chanting, "No Kurd, no Arab, Syrian people are one. We salute the martyrs of Daraa."
