Goidhoo Atoll, a natural atoll administratively part of Baa Atoll. The French navigator Pyrard de Laval’s ship, Corbin, was wrecked near Innafushi — the only uninhabited island in the atoll. Pyrard provided a detailed historical account of the Maldives. The British surveyed the Maldives, led by East India Company hydrographer James Horsburgh, the atoll was named Horsburgh Atoll in his honor. Fehendhoo families were powerful in the government during the period Maldives embraced Islam. In the Middle Ages, Usman from Fehendhoo became the King of the Maldives. In the Buddhist era, Goidhoo was a prominent island. The island was called “Kandu Goidhoo” — “the Goidhoo of the sea.” The atoll itself was often called Goifulhafehendhoo, and among people of Baa Atoll, it was called Falhuthere. The three inhabited islands of Goidhoo Atoll were used as banishment or “prison islands” until recently. One of the first telecommunications from Male’ was connected to Goidhoo atoll, the prison islands.
