In so many domains lately, including medicine, climate change, religion, politics, and education, there are real threats to integrity, honesty, and accuracy. Many of us are gaslighted into being automatically suspicious, divisive, and conspiratorial, embracing unnecessary & sometimes quite dangerous cynicism, shunning healthy discussion and skepticism on the way to something much more toxic. To push back these waters that would drown us in pernicious misinformation and practices when it comes to assessment and grading, I highly recommend a new book, Grading with Integrity (Corwin Press, 2024) by @tguskey @DFISHERSDSU @NancyFrey. The writing is cogent, the ideas applicable, the message clear, the research compelling, and the effect when reading it, conviction to the point of informed action. Grab this one, read and talk about it with a colleague or five, then consider accompanying that experience with just as helpful and inspiring reads: the 2nd edition of @JoeCFeldman's Grading for Equity, the third edition of @kenoc7's A Repair Kit for Grading, and @matttownsely @DonSmithEdu @LarsonGarth @BeckyPeppler's Extinguishing the Fires Within Assessment and Grading Reform. These all empower us to correct misconceptions (and directly counter myths), act upon the research, imperil complacency, and most importantly, make sure reports of student learning have integrity and are thereby useful and ethical to everyone involved.
