Celebrating Ghana’s 69th Independence Day at the UK Parliament 🇬🇭
Honoured and grateful to be included in the UK Black Stars List, recognising influential British-Ghanaians shaping public life, business, and culture across the United Kingdom.
It was a wonderful evening at the Parliamentary Reception in the House of Commons, connecting with so many inspiring Ghanaians and celebrating the impact of our diaspora.
Congratulations to my friend @bell_ribeiroaddy MP and the APPG on Ghana for organising such a meaningful event, and it was also great to see our Ghana High Commissioner @miss_zee5 and so many distinguished guests championing Ghanaian excellence.
A proud moment to celebrate both Ghana’s Independence Day and the incredible contributions of British-Ghanaians.

WHY FIGHT GALAMSEY?
Galamsey, in simple terms, refers to small-scale or illegal mining, especially of gold. But I’ll spare you the textbook definition. Most of us already know how destructive galamsey is to our environment, atmosphere, water bodies, properties, and even human lives. So yes, people jump at the chance to crucify those involved in the practice. And rightly so many use unsafe and irresponsible methods that need to be regulated or completely stopped.
But here’s the thing: if we want these people to put down their tools and allow the land to breathe, have we provided them with alternative tools so they and their families can also breathe?
Take Tarkwa, for example, a city where the vast majority of people depend solely on galamsey for survival. Strip them of that, and you’ll have a full-blown economic crisis another “1983” that could last a decade. This is why the fight needs to be reframed.
Think about it. If I have a job that pays well, provides stability, and gives me dignity, why would I risk my life going 100 feet underground into pitch-black pits, where the only oxygen comes from a machine above? And if that machine fails, so do I. No one abandons school, talent, or dreams when they’re part of a system that works. Nobody leaves behind their potential to become the next Asamoah Gyan, Daddy Lumba, or John Dumelo if there are real opportunities to thrive.
Creating jobs isn’t just about setting up offices or white-collar roles. Ghana is sitting on a deep well of untapped talent that’s where the real “galamsey” should be happening. Cities like Tarkwa and Obuasi are full of talented youth who, with the right investment, could become national assets.
Take football. Fatawu Issahaku’s €17 million move from Sporting Lisbon reportedly earned Steadfast FC owned by Hon. Haruna Iddrisu about €7.9 million. That’s just one player, from one club. Imagine if we invested properly in sports. There are many juvenile sports teams in Tarkwa stacked with super talented young players who needs a chance, and if they don’t get and their age is gets older, they don’t get opportunities and they have to go into the pits to survive.
Now let’s talk music. In 2023, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) reported $17.1 billion in music revenue. If Ghana put proper structures and transparent regulations in place, could we not claim even a fraction of that?
And then there’s the film industry. Scroll through TikTok and you’ll see young Ghanaians acting their hearts out, and yes, some content is trash, but many are brilliant. They’re telling stories, making people laugh, and keeping us glued to our screens. But here’s the problem: Ghana, after 68 years of independence, still has only one international-standard theatre. No proper cinemas for premiere tours, no real infrastructure to support the booming creative energy of our youth. Meanwhile, the U.S. made $8.9 billion from movies alone, according to Statista.
So here’s what I’m saying: If we redirect even a portion of the funds we pump into chasing galamsey operators into building up the sports and creative industries, these sectors could become powerful enough to draw the youth away from illegal mining and make serious money for the country in the process.
Plenty of money, I mean enough money, for our leaders to… well, I’ll keep that one to myself.
And that, my friends, is why we don’t need to fight galamsey, we need to outgrow it.
