How long should you do founder led sales before hiring a sales team? 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝘀𝘄𝗲𝗿: As long as it takes to deeply understand your customers, messaging, and sales process. Most founders rush to hire sales too soon. But if you don’t have a repeatable, proven way to close deals, hiring a team won’t fix that, it’ll just burn cash. 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀? 🔹 You’re still figuring out the messaging. If you can’t confidently explain the value, neither will your team. 🔹 You’re still refining your ideal customer. If you don’t know exactly who buys (and why), a sales hire will struggle. 🔹 Sales cycles are long or complex. For high ticket or niche products, prospects expect to talk to the founder early on. Rule of thumb: If you haven’t personally closed at least 10 deals, you’re probably not ready to hand it off. 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗜𝘀 𝗜𝘁 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗛𝗶𝗿𝗲? ✅ You have a repeatable process. If you can document your sales playbook, such as messaging, objections, deal flow, others can execute it. ✅ You’re turning down business because of time. If sales are suffering because you’re too busy, you need help. ✅ Your product is mature enough. If new deals mostly follow a pattern and don’t require constant customisation, a sales team can scale it. 𝗢𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗮 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝘀𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 Not ready for a full hire? 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁: 𝘀𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿’𝘀 𝗷𝗼𝗯 (𝗮𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗲) No one will sell your vision better than you in the early days. Even after hiring a team, the best founders stay involved in sales, whether for key accounts, partnerships, or refining strategy. The question isn’t “When can I stop selling?”, it’s “When can I make sales predictable enough to delegate?” Are you at the point where a sales team makes sense? Or do you need to refine your process first?
