This is honestly insane. You can’t incarcerate someone in 2026 over a tweet from 2017. People say and do foolish things when they’re young. It’s part of growing up.
That pinned tweet reflects a broader environment of indoctrination many of us were exposed to under state guidance. For years, certain groups and figures were portrayed as freedom fighters engaged in a holy war.
I don’t agree with Saad’s politics. I’ve had him blocked for a long time. But personal disagreement doesn’t justify arbitrary detention over something posted nearly a decade ago.
The government needs to rein in these officials. Arresting young people on such frivolous grounds is unacceptable.

On @hafizsaadriaz I know a person who has diligently worked in the background to get him released since he was first arrested. This person is resourceful and has gone out of their way to help Saad and his family. But what can one say when CTD and officials just show us Saad’s pinned tweet? How can we defend this? It is frustrating that these kids are deluded to the level where they just refuse to listen to concerned friends and family. That person who has been trying to help Saad gets shown such things and loses their own reputation for the sake of a guy’s misguided opinions. Note: Important to mention that Saad’s pinned tweet from 2017 was pinned yesterday (while he has been in custody since Monday 27th April). So someone from CTD seems to have access to his account.

One thing all Pakistan should be on the same page on is the strict opposition to enforced disappearances and unfair trial if they want to get rid of this practice. This habit of pick and choose over which enforced appearances should be condemned is the reason the practice is now out of control. Because the authorities will come after everyone. Maybe today you feel you're safe because you're on their side but one day these powers will change their policies like they always have and then they'll come after you as well.
