Years back, I was a big fan of buying these types of tomatoes because they were cheaper. One thing about POVERTY is the ability to make you think you’re smart, without realizing you’re slowly harming yourself. Back then, buying those tomatoes didn’t feel like a bad decision at all. In fact, it felt like a win. You’d walk into the market, scan prices and immediately your mind would lock onto what you could afford, not what was ideal. When you’re managing limited money, your thinking becomes very practical. You stop asking for the best option and start asking, CAN THESE STILL WORK? And as long as the tomato looked mostly okay, that was enough justification. A lot of us grew up believing that food only becomes dangerous when it smells horrible or looks completely rotten. Tomatoes are full of water which makes them an easy playground for mold. By the time you see that little spot, the mold has usually spread deep inside the tomato. When the mold grows, it breaks down the tomato’s structure. That makes it easier for bacteria to move in. Pathogens like Salmonella or E. coli can set up a bedroom flat in the same tomato. So even if you cut off the moldy spot, bacteria might still be inside, waiting. Some molds even produce mycotoxins which are poisonous compounds that don’t die when you cook the tomato. That’s why rinsing, boiling or frying doesn’t guarantee safety. Those invisible chemicals can stress your gut, your liver and your immune system over time. You might not feel it immediately, but trust me, it adds up. Always eating outside is even riskier. Street vendors, Buka and restaurants often have no idea how long their tomatoes have been sitting. You have no guarantee of their source, their storage or whether they’ve been contaminated by bacteria. A moldy tomato is never worth it. If you see mold, discard the tomato. It’s not waste. Being smart doesn’t always mean saving money, sometimes it means saving yourself.
