Huge congrats to @JCSD_Girlsbball and their head coach Chad Jilek on their 3rd straight state title and 79th straight win! Coach Jilek was our Mohawk assistant varsity baseball coach for 3 state tournament teams including 2 semi-final appearances from 2003-2007.

The @IAHSBCA was saddened by the news of the loss of the winningest high school coach in the national. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Gene Schultz family during their time of grief.

With heavy hearts, Eastern Allamakee mourns the passing of beloved coach and educator Gene Schultz

Coach Gene Schultz passed away today. He was the all time leader in Wins as a head coach in the USA. Dennis Olejniczak was 2nd and passed away less than a month ago, located less than a half hour drive from where I grew up in the driftless area of northeast Iowa. Lansing, Iowa is a little river town along the Mississippi River, connected to Iowa, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. We used to taunt the Lansing kids growing up as river rats, but these guys lived, breathed, and sang baseball. It was like a religion, and you couldn’t help but feel in awe of the perfect marriage of Shookey Fink and old time baseball to the modern day. They were just so much sharper and better prepared than every team they played. My dad went to college at Winona State with Gene and wound up battling in baseball and basketball. Time went on so far that Gene’s son Gabe (who could really shoot it) had to guard playing basketball and then was doing play by play for him at Kee High and for the University of Northern Iowa baseball team. Didn’t know Gene well, but the first ever radio play by play broadcast I ever did in my life was my Junior year in HS, and remember as he was walking to the opposing dugout and I was trying to get a lineup and didn’t want to share a word with me. Just an old time baseball guy, and respected that he had seen more of this than i could ever dream of. As I got older I dealt with depression and went to therapy, and was encouraged to get into coaching. I made it a mission with the Boys and Girls Club of La Crosse and coached 13u baseball. Totally changed my life for the better. It really challenged me as a coach when we took our team to for a tournament there, and just how sharp those Lansing area kids were and how much baseball was something so much in their blood. In 2014, as a shot in the dark I interviewed to be the head baseball coach at De Soto HS in Division 5 in Wisconsin. Right across the river from Lansing. I was working as a volunteer assistant basketball coach at La Crosse Central (D1) while working a full time job during day. Got hired to coach JV and remember the athletic director of a tiny school in De Soto asking me “do you want to do this?”. Best months of my life. I only mention this because I had wanted to move to Austin since 2010. I had a buddy with a band that wanted to make it. The band fell apart and everyone went their own direction. So it was just me left in the aftermath. The final game I ever got to coach was at Shookey Fink Field in Lansing, Iowa where my dad battled for a decade plus against some of the best to ever do it. Didn’t matter we won; it was an honor to step on that field and carry on the traditions of our fathers. My dad could go further into detail about what it meant to try to win against those guys, but any athlete in Iowa should praise the legacy of what Gene and Dennis built in northeast Iowa. Legends live forever.

JUST ANNOUNCED: The University of Iowa Hawkeyes will face the Purdue Boilermakers at Principal Park to wrap up the Big Ten regular season in a three-game series on May 14-16, 2026. Tickets go on sale Wednesday, February 25 at 9:00 AM CT.
