So I was talking to my cousin recently, and honestly, his situation has been stuck in my head. He’s 31, based in Lagos, working as a data engineer earning around ₦85M a year. Solid career, steady growth, everything on track. Then out of nowhere, he gets headhunted for a role in Abuja offering about ₦170M plus equity. Like, the kind of opportunity you don’t just “think about.” The kind you’ve been working toward for years. But here’s where it gets complicated. His fiancée (29) owns a physical therapy clinic in Lagos. She started it from scratch about three years ago, and now it’s finally doing really well, pulling in roughly ₦140M in revenue and just hitting profitability. She’s even thinking about opening a second location. So this isn’t something she can just lock up and relocate. They’ve been together for four years, engaged for six months, and their wedding is set for October this year. When he told her about the offer, she just went quiet, then said something like, “Okay, I guess we need to figure out what we’re actually doing here.” Since then, it’s been back and forth. He can’t ignore an offer like that, not just the money, but the career leap. She can’t abandon a business she built from nothing. And long distance? When you’re about to get married? That already sounds like a crack forming before things even begin. So now it feels like one person has to sacrifice something massive, and nobody wants to be the one who does. Then last night, she said something that really threw him off. She suggested they might need to “put something in writing about their businesses and assets before deciding anything”, just in case he moves and long distance doesn’t work, or she gives everything up to follow him and ends up resenting him. And he said that part hit him hard. Because on one hand, it felt, transactional. On the other hand, he understands why she’d think that way. Now he’s just there, confused. He thought their life was already mapped out. Now everything feels uncertain. And the crazy part is, both options feel like a loss. He has to give them an answer by the end of next week and he genuinely doesn’t know what the “right” decision even looks like anymore.
