The bass in FFIV's boss theme isn't filler. It's a story.
-Opens with the iconic Final Fantasy battle riff
-Keeps beat and fills gaps with a melody of its own
-Shifts to another melody as strings swell

One overlooked art of retro game OSTs is bass riffs that tell a story. Uematsu and Mistuda were masters at this. Decisive Battle (FFVI) is one example. The bass doesn't just mirror the lead—it fills gaps, carries its own melody, and contextualizes the organ and strings.
