In 1993, when Nigeria was transitioning from military to civilian rule, former military head of state, Yakubu Gowon, tried to return as a civilian president. Many political experts expected him to at least make it to the ballot. But Gowon didn't see one man coming. According to a cover story by Newswatch: ▶️Gowon signalled interest in the race in early 1992, saying concerned Nigerians were urging him to run. ▶️To secure the presidential ticket of the National Republican Convention (NRC), he first had to win a local government primary. His main rival there was Dalhatu Tafida, a man who had been his junior in Barewa College, Zaria. ▶️Gowon’s support base was formidable. Prominent Nigerians, traditional rulers, senior military officers, and top civil servants rallied around him. Tafida was pressured repeatedly to step aside. At one point, he was even offered ₦20 million to withdraw. ▶️Critics were less impressed by Gowon’s stature. They described him as “naive,” “weak as a military leader,” “too pro-IBB,” and “too involved in extending military transition.” ▶️While Gowon’s allies focused on breaking Tafida’s resolve, Tafida’s camp quietly took control of the ward congresses that produced delegates. Most delegates were already loyal to him. ▶️On election day, Gowon’s agents reportedly offered delegates ₦10,000 each to vote for him. When that failed, a Kano businessman dangled free pilgrimages to Mecca. It still was not enough. ▶️The result was brutal. Tafida secured 165 of 194 votes. Gowon managed just 29. Tafida was instantly branded “the giant killer.” Gowon quietly disappeared from the venue and reportedly flew to London the next day, stunned by the scale of the defeat. ▶️Tafida himself would later lose the NRC’s presidential ticket to Bashir Tofa, who went on to face MKO Abiola of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the June 12, 1993 election.
