WATCH | A young man claims that he travelled all the way from Gweru to try his luck in finding at least one of the US$100 notes that were part of the US$500 hidden by Paul Tungwarara’s daughter at various locations around the Trabablas Interchange. The video also shows a large number of people who turned up to search for the hidden notes.

What a load of misinformed waffle.

I have supported several pupils through their Cambridge programmes, and they have all performed commendably. However, I have consistently observed a gap: the marginalisation of vernacular languages, arts and practical subjects. When these areas are sacrificed, the education system becomes incomplete, producing learners who may excel academically but lack cultural grounding and applied competencies. An education framework that allows progression to A Level on the basis of (say) only four Cambridge passes risks narrowing intellectual development. It prioritises a limited set of core subjects at the expense of a more holistic, well-rounded education that nurtures critical thinking, creativity, and practical skills. Hence the country is overloaded with lawyers and accountants. More broadly, Zimbabwe’s education system, much like its health sector, has evolved into a two-tier structure, largely shaped by the realities of a dual-currency environment. Access, quality, and outcomes are increasingly determined by financial capacity, creating systemic inequalities and half-backed learners. In this context, as the country moves towards a unified single currency regime, it is understandable that the government seeks to harmonise and reassert oversight of the education system. Such efforts, if carefully implemented, could help restore equity, coherence, and national relevance within the sector.
