@litteras_nescio Hi Anselmo, thanks for your comment! I agree with all that you say, and the more squarely legal attitudes form the other half of my PhD. I argue that a distinct antiquarian attitude had developed alongside efforts to show the legal consent you mention,

@DrKCMCross Yes, he did! But his evidence for the survival of Danelaw in modern English law was the “great agreement of our present common laws with the laws and customes of the Normans at this day”, as their ethnic similarity made this the most likely explanation!

Excellent perspective from Dr Rambaran-Olm on how MTG’s (thankfully) failed caucus is the latest in a long history of sinister uses of the medieval past. It is high time that we all do our part to raise awareness about the dangers of descent myths and historical appropriation.
