What do the inattentionally blind see? In by far the largest empirical project I've been involved in, @NartkerMakaela finds striking sensitivity to the colour, shape + location of "unseen" stimuli, as well as substantial bias not to report it. Check her pre-print out below 👇👀🦍

Started reading my (free PDF!) of Nick Shea's Concepts at the Interface this morning. Already evident how deeply informed & deeply thought out a book it is -- philosophical cognitive science at its v best. Want to think about thinking? Download it here: global.oup.com/academic/produ…

@NeilLevy10 @chazfirestone @NartkerMakaela It's a v interesting question. But I don't think we have a clear comparison which shows humans don't/can't adapt. Blindsight in humans is rare + almost universally unilateral so there is little incentive to learn to exploit severely + qualitatively degraded vision unlike chimps.

A few years ago, @NartkerMakaela began a hugely ambitious project on one of the most important & best-known phenomena in psychology. 25,000 subjects later, she’s sharing her paper showing surprising sensitivity to “unseen” objects in attentional blindness! biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

@NeilLevy10 @NartkerMakaela i suppose one could call that intentional non-reporting, but we feel drawn to the language of signal detection theory – people are conservatively biased in their yes/no reports. as for the the analogy to blindsight, @ibphillips is really the expert!!

Weird that the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy still does not have an entry for Gareth Evans, one of the most brilliant philosophers of the twentieth century

Really looking forward to presenting this work on visual sensitivity & awareness in inattentional blindness by @NartkerMakaela, @chazfirestone, Howard Egeth & myself @NeuralMech this Fri -- and especially to discussing with @attninaction & others! See below for some homework 👇
Wayne Wu@attninaction

Excited to comment this Fri on a great study by @NartkerMakaela, @chazfirestone, Howard Egeth & @ibphillips hosted by @NeuralMech U can prep! Read Chp 5 of Attention (2014) on the intricacies of conclusions wrt inattentional blindness & consciousness 🧵 bit.ly/WUonIB
