What happened to the mosques in Thessaloniki is not a cute trivia question. It is memory policy. The city’s Ottoman Islamic layer did not simply “fade with time.” It was compressed by a nation state logic that treats heritage as a branding exercise: keep what fits the preferred story, remove what complicates it. Domes and minarets were not just stone, they were symbols of a layered past. When you strip them, you do not modernize the city, you curate it into a single narrative.
And that is the hypocrisy inside the “cradle of civilization” performance. Civilization is not a slogan. A civilized society preserves every layer of its urban memory, not only the comfortable ones. Polishing one heritage while erasing another is not preservation, it is ideological sanitization. The loss is not only buildings. It is the architectural evidence that plural history once existed there.

"Iranians are 99% Muslim". No they're not. Let me explain what Shia Muslim for majority of Iranians was when I was growing up. It means you drink alcohol all year, you dont say prayers, you dont pay zakat, amd in Ramadhan, you dont fast, but "out of respect" for Ramadhan, you dont drink alcohol during that month. And you sometimes use religious terms in conversations, like Inshallah, or ya Ali. That's the extent of Shia Islam faith of the majority of Iranians. Sorry to break it to our Muslim friends.
