The increasing number of cesarean sections (C-sections) has driven a sharp rise in placenta accreta spectrum (PAS), a dangerous condition that's endangering more women's lives. Placenta accreta occurs when the placenta abnormally attaches to (or invades) the uterine wall, often due to scar tissue from prior C-sections. Once extremely rare—occurring in about 1 in 4,000 pregnancies in the 1970s—it has become far more common, with some studies and reports estimating rates as high as 1 in 272 deliveries in recent data, or around 1 in 533 in earlier 2000s figures, reflecting the ongoing surge tied to higher C-section rates. This dramatic increase stems directly from the growing prevalence of surgical births, which create the scarring that predisposes the placenta to these abnormal attachments in future pregnancies. When placenta accreta develops, it can trigger massive, life-threatening hemorrhage during delivery. Blood loss can be so rapid and severe that a woman risks bleeding out in minutes—often requiring massive blood transfusions that small or community hospitals may struggle to provide quickly enough. This frequently leads to emergency hysterectomies, organ damage, prolonged ICU stays, and, in the worst cases, maternal death. The condition exposes deeper flaws in the maternity care system: Few specialized centers exist for managing high-risk cases, meaning many women must travel long distances or temporarily relocate for expert prenatal care and delivery planning. The tragic toll—lost mothers, devastated families—has intensified calls for improved early screening (via ultrasound or MRI), greater awareness of risks, and efforts to curb unnecessary C-sections. Experts emphasize the need for transparent discussions about the long-term dangers of repeated surgical deliveries and stronger preventive strategies to reverse this trend in modern obstetrics.
