CEO & Founder Colin McInnes is calling for Cllr Ken Andrew to resign after he closed today’s planning meeting moments after voting to refuse planning permission for our night shelter and soup kitchen with the words: “let’s go get that lunch.” To make such a remark on the second day of Poverty Week, when thousands in our city go hungry, is nothing short of contemptuous towards Glasgow’s most vulnerable. Statement from Colin McInnes, CEO of Homeless Project Scotland 7 October 2025 “Today, I am deeply disappointed and disgusted to have watched @theSNP and @scottishgreens councillors vote to reject permission for @hp_scotland Homeless Project Scotland ’s night shelter a vital facility that provides warmth, safety, and dignity to those with nowhere else to turn. This decision has left the homeless and vulnerable once again facing uncertainty and fear about their future. It is not enough that they have already endured sleepless nights worrying about where they will go now they must wait yet another year or more for the next planning application. It is clear where the priorities of the SNP and Greens lie. On the second day of Challenge Poverty Week a week meant to highlight the fight against hardship those in power have chosen to reject a shelter and hot food service that exists to protect people from poverty, hunger, and cold. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to the Labour councillors who stood up for what is right today, who supported our facility fully and voted to approve. Your compassion and integrity shine through on a day when others turned their backs on the people of Glasgow. What was even more shocking was how the meeting was closed with Councillor Ken Andrew saying, ‘Let’s go and get that lunch.’ To end a meeting that determined the fate of homeless people in such an insensitive manner, on a week dedicated to tackling poverty, is nothing short of horrific. While people across this city struggle to eat or find a safe place to rest, that remark spoke volumes about the disconnect between decision-makers and those they are meant to serve. To our incredible volunteers, our service users, and the members of the press who came out today thank you. You stood tall in the face of injustice, and your strength gives me hope. 📸 This was last night at our shelter. A mother and her 3-day-old baby had nowhere else to go. Glasgow City Council phone lines were down. No support was available. If our volunteer-run shelter didn’t exist, this newborn and their mum would have been sleeping on the streets of Glasgow. This is the harsh reality. This is why we fight to keep our shelter open.
