One striking thing about the Japanese tweets breaking through to the Anglo world right now is how instantly you *feel* the Japanese voice behind them, even though every word is in English.
You'd scroll past a dozen perfectly native English tweets and then bam! Something lands differently. The cadence and syntax of the post itself hit you like a stray spark from another universe so you pause and look at the handle and… true enough! There’s the weird squiggly kanji lines. “Hello my Japanese E.T friend!”
There’s an immediate, almost visceral and tactile difference in the prose, the way the sentences seem to breathe in the wrong places, the syntax that strains and then releases at an angle English would never choose on its own.
If translation were truly efficient, we’d never notice the difference. The tweet would dissolve into the endless scroll like every other musing from a native English speaker. Instead, something stubbornly Japanese leaks through which stops you cold in your tracks.
There are a few reasons for this.
Japanese is structurally opposed to the English habit of front-loading the subject and the linear SVO (Subject Verb Object) path. Like Chinese and Korean, it’s a topic prominent language where the subject is deprioritized and the verb comes at the end of the sentence. It relies heavily on small words called particles to define the role of each part of the sentence while English utilizes word order and articles instead.
Emotions are conveyed through nuance and ellipsis rather than declaration. A lot of Japanese internet writing also lives in a register that sits between casual speech and written formality, laced with onomatopoeia, kaomoji, and a kind of rhythmic restraint that feels almost haiku-like.
Whatever the translation is doing, it’s pitch perfect precisely because it is NOT efficient. It’s kind of like detecting a feint foreign accent or a different rhythmic lilt in a non-native speaker. A perfect, frictionless rendering of auto-transate would sterilize the aesthetic fingerprint.
You see the same thing sometimes in translated Japanese fiction; Murakami comes to mind. These works retain an unmistakable texture even when the English is fluent. The machine is doing on a mass scale and in real time what human translators have wrestled with for decades - how to navigate the trade-off between clarity and fidelity to voice.
I guess nobody knows "the beauty of imperfection" better than the Japanese - they have this whole thing called Wabi-sabi.
If tomorrow’s AI finally masters perfect Japanese-to-English translation, if every translated tweet reads like it was written by a witty Anglophone, something small and irreplaceable will vanish from the timeline. We’ll lose the tiny thrill of recognizing a mind shaped by different grammatical gravity, different habits of attention, different philosophies, different traditions, and different aesthetics.
For now though, the quirk remains. And every time one of those tweets drifts across my feed, I feel grateful for the inefficiency.
I pray nobody ever invents the Babel Fish.
