2020. Just after the COVID lockdown, I traveled to Lagos to look for a job. My first interview was at Ikeja GRA and I was staying in Ikorodu. I exhausted all the money I had on my way there and was left with just 200 naira. All through the interview, the only thing in my head was how I was going to get home. I decided that I would trek. I kept lying to myself that it wasn’t that far. Ikeja GRA to Ikorodu. After the interview, I started my 40 years walk from Egypt to the Promised Land. 😂 But as God would have it, someone drove out from the company just as I was leaving the gate. He asked where I was going. I told him somewhere I could get a vehicle to Ikorodu. He told me to get in. When we got to Maryland, where I was supposed to get a bus, he said he was going to Mile 12 and that he would drop me there. I started praising God in my heart. We started talking and he asked how I would manage from Ikorodu (not even the garage, inside inside) every day if I got job. He asked the cost of transportation. I didn’t even know, because that day I had spent more than I should since I didn’t know the place. Then I laughed and told him I didn’t even know. I said I was actually planning to trek home that day because all the money I had left was 200. The way he looked at me, I almost went to hide under the car seat. 😭 Well, he decided to drop me off at Ikorodu garage, took me to where I would get a bus to Elepe, paid for it, and even gave me money for a bike from Elepe to my house. E do me like film.

I saw the slippers I bought her the previous week.

Final year in school. I had this friend… not just a guy I gist with. Like my guy my guy. You know as e be. We built everything together from year one. Same struggles and all. There was this girl I really liked. I told him everything. He was always asking: “Have you checked on her?” “Have you heard from her?” “Wetin she dey like?” “What kind of things does she enjoy?” I thought it was concern. I didn’t know I was doing research for him. Slowly, he became more present around her. More involved. Too involved. I even joked one day: “You sure say you no dey like this girl?” He laughed. I believed him. Then things changed. She became distant. Replies started reducing. I didn’t understand it. What I didn’t know was that he had started telling her things about me… including that I had a serious medical condition. She believed him. He was a med student. I was a law student. His word carried weight. The day everything made sense, I had just finished "night class" (Overnight reading). I branched his place in Ekosodin (those of us that schooled in Uniben will know) before heading back to my hostel. This was around 6:30 thereabout. As I got to his door… I saw the slippers I bought her the previous week. Outside. My heart just dropped. I just hear "gbim" for my chest. Everywhere just blur. I called her phone. It rang… inside. No answer. I called again. And again. Nothing. I called him. First time, no answer. Second time, he picked. Said he was at his uncle’s place in New Benin. I just stood there for a few seconds… then turned back. That 10-minute walk to my hostel felt like the longest journey of my life. Till today, she doesn’t know why I left. He doesn’t know that I know. But I learnt something early: Some people don’t fight you. They study you… then replace you.
