A 10 foot tall stone statue from the 6th Century AD, that was uncovered ny a potato farmer in Kyrgyzstan 🇰🇬 in 2022....
The statue uncovered in Kyrgyzstan belongs to a class of ancient monuments known as balbals or stone figures, carved across Central Asia for more than a thousand years. These figures, typically dating from the early Turkic khaganates of the sixth through ninth centuries, were erected on the open steppe as memorials to warriors, clan leaders, or ancestors. Many hold cups, daggers, or other symbolic objects that represented hospitality, authority, or status.
The discovery happened in 2022 when a farmer plowing a field in the Issyk-Kul region struck something unusually solid beneath the soil. As he dug deeper, the outline of a large humanoid form emerged. Archaeologists later identified the figure as an early medieval balbal, carved during a time when nomadic Turkic peoples dominated Central Asian corridor between Mongolia and Black Sea.
Such statues are culturally significant because they illuminate the beliefs and funerary customs of the early Turkic world. They were often arranged in lines leading toward burial mounds, serving both as markers of lineage and as symbols of the deceased’s prestige. Many were toppled or buried by shifting landscapes, making accidental discoveries like this invaluable to historians.
The find also highlights how much of Central Asia’s archaeological heritage still lies hidden beneath farmland and pastureland, waiting to be uncovered not by scientific expedition but by everyday people working the land.
The Issyk-Kul region, where this statue was found, sits along a major branch of the ancient Silk Road. Dozens of balbals and petroglyphs discovered there suggest the area was a crossroads for early Turkic, Sogdian, and later Islamic cultures, making it one of Central Asia’s richest archaeological zones.
