The best metrics aren't pretty dashboards. They're the 3 numbers your CEO actually asks about in standup. If you're tracking 15 KPIs, you have zero metrics.

The PM job market paradox: tech layoffs are everywhere, but PM openings are at a 3-year high. Companies are cutting middle management. They are keeping the PMs who own outcomes and tie product decisions to revenue. The job is not disappearing. The bar is rising.

First 30 days as a new PM: - 15+ customer calls - Shadow support for a full day - Read 6 months of customer feedback - Map the stakeholder landscape Do not touch the roadmap until day 60. You have not earned the context yet.

The generalist PM is dead. In 2026, the strongest PMs move between strategy, execution, and growth. AI handles the grunt work. What is left is the hard stuff: which problem to solve, how to position it, and whether it moves the business. Go full-stack or go home.

PM resume tip: every bullet should pass the so what test. Managed 5 engineers. So what? Led 5-person team that shipped payments, growing revenue 34% in Q3. That is impact. Hiring managers skim in 30 seconds. Impact gets interviews. Job descriptions get skipped.

The best retro format I have found: 4 Ls Liked (wins) Learned (new info) Lacked (what was missing) Longed For (what we wish we had) Less confrontational than "what went wrong." More actionable too.

PM hot take: the 20-page PRD is dead. Write the problem, the constraints, and the definition of done. Let engineering design the solution. The spec should document a validated direction, not a guess.

The best features I have shipped came from giving a sharp engineer a clear problem and saying how would you solve this. Write the what and why. Let engineering own the how.

The one metric most PM dashboards are missing: stickiness ratio (DAU/MAU). Revenue tells you what happened. Churn tells you who left. Stickiness tells you who is about to leave. A product at 40% stickiness has a retention problem brewing. Track the input, not the output.

49% of PM teams say shifting priorities and resource constraints cause the most misalignment. The fix is not more meetings. It is one sentence per decision: "We chose X over Y because Z metric matters most this quarter." Transparency scales. Consensus does not.

Put outcomes on your roadmap, not features. "Build SSO" locks you into a solution. "Reduce enterprise deal cycle by 15 days" lets your team find the right one.

PM tip: add a confidence column to your prioritization scores. High impact means nothing if your confidence in that estimate is 20%. Low confidence + high impact = run an experiment. High confidence + high impact = build it now.

"Prompt engineering is the new PM literacy." Partially true. The real skill gap is upstream. Knowing HOW to prompt is table stakes. Knowing WHAT to ask (which customer problem, which metric, which tradeoff) is the differentiator. AI compressed the build. Not the thinking.
