My Dear Sister-in-Islam, When the chest is exposed but the head is covered, it is not Ḥijāb. When the head is covered but the body is wrapped in tight-fitted clothing that seductively reveals the shape of the body, it is not Ḥijāb. When the hair is concealed but beauty, adornment and attraction are deliberately displayed for attention, it is not Ḥijāb. When the garment itself becomes a means of showing off, competing for attention and seeking admiration, it departs from the spirit of Ḥijāb. When modesty disappears from speech, conduct and interaction, cloth alone does not complete Ḥijāb. Ḥijāb is not merely a scarf on the head; it is modesty in dress, dignity in conduct, humility in movement and consciousness of Allāh in public and private. True Ḥijāb is a garment of faith, modesty and honour. When you adorn the Hijāb, do it properly, understand and observe its etiquettes so that Allah recognizes you as one of those who sincerely obey His command.

“Do not abandon the remembrance of Allah merely because you do not feel fully present with Him during it. For your heedlessness while engaging in remembrance is less severe than your heedlessness while abandoning remembrance altogether. Perhaps He may elevate you from a remembrance accompanied by negligence to a remembrance accompanied by wakefulness; and from a remembrance accompanied by wakefulness to a remembrance accompanied by presence; and from a remembrance accompanied by presence to a remembrance in which you are absent from everything besides the One remembered. And that is not difficult for Allah.” — Al-Ḥikam al-ʿAṭāʾiyyah by Ibn ʿAṭāʾ Allāh al-Sakandarī

The general advice, that Muslims should be mindful of the meanings of their names and avoid altering them into words with negative or inappropriate meanings, is reasonable. However, many of the linguistic claims in this write-up are inaccurate, exaggerated, or oversimplified. Some shortened forms are not actually Arabic words at all, while others are being interpreted incorrectly. Here is a clearer assessment: Rasheedah (رشيدة) means “rightly guided” or “righteous.” “Sheeddah” is likely intended to refer to shiddah (شدّة) which means “hardship” or “severity,” but “Sheeddah” itself is not a standard Arabic name or word in the way presented. Haleemah (حليمة) means “gentle” or “forbearing.” “Leemah” is not the Arabic word for wig. The Arabic word for wig is closer to waṣl or barūkah/barūكة in some usages. So this claim is incorrect. Fareedah (فريدة) means “unique” or “precious.” “Riddah (ردّة)” does mean apostasy, but “Reedah” as written here is not necessarily the same word linguistically. Fāṭimah (فاطمة) means “one who abstains” or “weans.” “Teemah” does not properly mean catastrophe in Arabic. Mansūrah (منصورة) means “victorious.” “Ṣūrah (صورة)” actually means “image/picture/form,” not specifically “photo.” This one has some linguistic basis, though it is still somewhat forced. Laṭīfah (لطيفة) means “kind,” “subtle,” or “pleasant.” “Teefah” meaning “ghost” is not correct Arabic. Baṣīrah (بصيرة) means “insight” or “spiritual perception.” “Sīrah (سيرة)” indeed means “biography,” “way,” or “history/life story.” This one is linguistically correct, though “history” alone is incomplete. Sakīnah (سكينة) means “tranquility” or “peace.” “Keenah” meaning betrayal is incorrect. Betrayal in Arabic is closer to khiyānah (خيانة). So, the post mixes a valid moral reminder with many inaccurate Arabic claims. It would be better to say: “Names in Islam often carry beautiful meanings and identities. While nicknames and shortened forms are permissible, Muslims should be mindful not to distort names into forms that may carry improper or meaningless expressions.” That would be more accurate, balanced, and academically sound.

There are four living things mentioned in the Quran that walked the earth and breathed, but none of them were ever born from a womb. They had no mothers. Can you name all four of them?

Since my surgery, I have only had one full sneeze. I nearly died that day. I didn't know that sneezing would draw my hip muscles, at the site of surgery. The pain was excruciating. Since then, I have learnt to sneeze halfway. It still hurts but is very minimal. Can't wait to heal fully. I never thought I would look forward to sneezing well. Life!
