When I was just out of college, I was working at a restaurant as a server while freelancing in graphic design. I had served there during school as well, and had learned a lot about hard work, grinding, and how to treat others. I’m grateful for those lessons. I had recently made the decision to move from upstate NY down to NYC to see what I could do with my career. I was talking to one of the longtime servers (and former educator) at the restaurant about my plan. He looked at me and said with confidence “you’ll be back”. In that moment, I vowed to never go back. I told myself I would do whatever it took to prove that guy wrong, and to show the world what I could do. I recognized that his words came more from a disbelief in himself than in me, and I saw purpose in inspiring others to believe they could do whatever they set their minds to. I would be happy if I was able to inspire 1 person to pursue their dreams. I never looked back, never went back, and have built a career, portfolio and life that I’m very grateful for and proud of. That moment was formative for me, and lit up my path for the years to come. Keep going, keep working, keep dreaming. Prove em wrong. F**k em if they don’t believe yet, they will.
