Fela Kuti wasn’t that a great musician. Pioneer yes, activist, yes, great performer, yes, but pure music, nah! His music is mostly noisy, can feel repetitive or heavily instrumental, with some songs stretching beyond seven minutes and large portions being instrumental breaks. He often spoke or chanted in most of his songs rather than focusing on actual singing.
I still hold him in high esteem because he was bold enough to criticize the government, then had most of his music themes on societal ills which makes him a revolutionary figure.
However, when it comes to pure singing and structure, you can’t compare him to artistes like King Sunny Ade or Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe who are far better musicians than him.
