Aptamers are cool they have low immunogenicity, less side effects, lower generation time (time taken to create an aptamer from scratch, compared to an antibody), and a smaller half life. The most important - aptamers can be modified for action!

The ‘apt’ in AptalXero comes from aptamer - but what is an aptamer, anyway? Aptamers are sequences of DNA, RNA, XNA, or peptides that have high specificity and binding affinity. Well, even antibodies do that - so why are aptamers special?

There’s still no consensus about the root cause of AD - but we’ve chosen to focus on Alzheimer’s as a tauopathy, and are centering our aptamer-based research on that hypothesis. Stay on the lookout for more cool details about our project! #igem #iisc #stem #synbio #alzheimers

We’re back with another post on Alzheimer’s Disease, going behind the scenes and exploring two theories for what the root cause may be! One well-established theory talks about amyloid plaques, which are clumps of misfolded proteins called beta amyloid.

.or ‘zero out’ the symptoms. You may have been wondering why our theme this year is so beachy - well, there’s a reason! The waves represent Alzheimer’s and dementia, with the high tides washing away sand being similar to loss of memory and cognition.

The name 𝐀𝐩𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐗𝐞𝐫𝐨 is a portmanteau of the words aptamer, Alzheimer’s and ‘zero’ - as one of the main focal points of our project is to explore aptamer-based therapeutic and diagnostic strategies for diseases such as Alzheimer’s, with a potential to greatly alleviate,

Presenting… 𝐀𝐩𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐗𝐞𝐫𝐨! Our goal is to develop novel biomedical strategies using aptamer specificity! If that sounds like a lot of jargon, don’t worry, we’ll be explaining it all in our upcoming posts.

Through his keen observation and undiminishing scientific temper, Alzheimer laid the foundation for the study of what is today one of the most widespread neurodegenerative diseases. Stay tuned for more updates from iGEM IISc, and our plans for this year!

Alzheimer was the first to observe and record the presence of unusual neurofibrillary tangles and plaques in his patient’s brain tissue. These continue to remain the histopathological hallmarks of AD. In his honor, June is commemorated as “Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month”
