Unnecessary complexity is probably the single biggest problem in the software industry. It spawns a host of problems. Write exactly what you need to write to solve the problem at hand, not one semicolon more.

@allenholub Isn’t this view too simplistic? I hardly see this working @ scale.

Of course, most of us don't have perfect flow, so in that situation a very small backlog (I think of it as a ready queue with WIP limits on it) may be needed. That's a very different thing than the usual slush pile of garbage work nobody will ever do stuffed into Jira.

A backlog is a sign that you are not managing capacity well. If the work flows perfectly, you don't need one. You pull work from the customer when you need something to do. Backlogs, however, indicate a push system, where work is pushed onto the teams regardless of capacity.

@GergelyOrosz Waterfall is more alive than you imagine. Get out there and you’ll spot it. Often in disguise, as some sort of boutique agile methodology for the enterprise. Utter nonsense, waterfall altogether.

One of the biggest lies in modern software engineering is referring to "waterfall", then using this as an excuse to not do *any* form of (written) planning. The "Waterfall" referred has died out in the majority of the industry. The "plan for 6 months, ship in 3 years" kind.
