facts about the Artemis II mission – they just returned from the Moon!
/ The first crewed mission beyond low Earth orbit since Apollo 17 (1972)! After 53 years, humans have circled the Moon again. Launch: April 1, 2026 from Kennedy Space Center aboard the SLS + Orion rocket.
/ Dream crew: Reid Wiseman (commander), Victor Glover (first astronaut of color beyond LEO), Christina Koch (first woman on such a mission) and Jeremy Hansen (first Canadian and non-American to fly near the Moon).
/ They broke the Apollo 13 record! The farthest distance from Earth in human history: 406,778 km (April 6, 2026). They flew just ~6,500 km from the Moon’s surface!
/ The 10-day mission tested Orion with a crew for the very first time. The European Service Module (ESA) provided power and propulsion. Behind the Moon: 40 minutes of radio silence, Earthrise, and… a total solar eclipse!
/ The success of Artemis II is the next step toward landing on the Moon (Artemis III) and building a base on the Silver Globe. Next stop? Mars!
