[ #MNL48 ] :: 8 Years of Rebooting : The MNL48 Story :: 48 is the number at the end of the group's name. It was also the number of members who stood on stage on debut day. 48 people. 48 dreams. 48 promises made in Manila. Eight years later, that number is now 24. This is the story of what happened in between. --------------------- (2018 – 2019) HHE ERA : The Golden Age with Cracks Underneath Before the group officially debuted, MNL48 held an election through the TV show It's Showtime to find the group's first center girl. At the It's Showtime studio in Manila, the Filipino version of Aitakatta played for the very first time. The image of 48 young women sharing one stage was a signal that the 48 Group was expanding its idol universe into new territory. MNL48 debuted with four teams simultaneously Team L, Team NIV, Team MII, and Kenkyuusei. Compared to sister groups in other countries that chose to start with one team and expand gradually, the management decided to carry nearly 50 members from day one before any sustainable revenue base had been built. This was an era of hope where Filipino fans saw them as "idols of our own. Not imported from Japan." But beneath the surface of that success, the company was quietly building small cracks from within. In 2019, the group held its 2nd Senbatsu General Election under a rule no group in 48 Group history had ever used. 77 candidates entered. Anyone ranked 49th or below... Was immediately removed from the group. Fans called it the Death SSK. On May 1, 2019, the group held a Mass Graduation for 29 members who had "failed" based on their own fans' votes. It was the day many fans realized that the money they had spent voting didn't protect the members they loved but had been used as a tool to eliminate them instead. Trust cracked for the first time. Before anyone knew that something far worse was coming. --------------------- (2020 – 2024) HIATUS ERA : When There Was No Plan B Then the nightmare arrived with COVID-19. The theater closed. Handshake events disappeared. Every source of income sustaining the group "went to zero all at once." A group designed to survive on theater shows and handshake tickets had nothing left when those two channels vanished. Salaries were delayed. The theater sat dark. But what was talked about least during that period wasn't the numbers that disappeared it was the lives of the girls who stayed. Many had moved from the provinces to the city for their dream. Some had stopped studying. Some had left their old lives behind. And they found themselves inside a system with no income, no work, and no safety net. --------------------- (Mar. 2025 – Dec. 2025) REBOOT ERA : The First Promise March 2025. The first company handed management over to a new one headquartered in Tokyo. This was the official announcement of the first major Reboot. Reboot & Rise was held at SM North EDSA. Senior members were sent off. A new captain was appointed. A new vision was declared. Abby a former member and election queen returned to take on the role of Shihainin. October 2025. MNL48 introduced their Gen 5 members at the Dream Beyond concert. Among them were Sakura Shion and Mirai Wanaka the group's first fully international members. The future looked bright. The group seemed to be moving toward the Borderless vision it had dreamed of. But beneath the surface, nothing had changed structurally. --------------------- (Jan. 2026 – present) P.O.S ERA : The Final Bet January 1, 2026. MNL48 Inc. renamed itself P.O.S Inc. Standing for Pearl of the Orient Seas. This was the second reboot within less than a year. Management confirmed that the spirit of MNL48 would continue, even if the group's name itself might eventually change. But for fans who had stayed, the 48 Group name was the only remaining "edge" the group had. Because it represented eight years of identity as an AKB48 sister group and it was the reason MNL48 was still being talked about as part of a global idol universe. If they abandoned that name, they would have to compete as a brand-new group in a P-pop market where BINI and SB19 had already set the bar exceptionally high. --------------------- What Does the P-Pop Market Actually Want from MNL48? One of the least discussed questions across eight years has been What does the Philippine entertainment market actually want? The P-pop scene that grew during the same period didn't rely on theater systems or handshake events. It grew through star power, performance, and clear branding. Groups like BINI and SB19 built their fanbase by being "artists that audiences feel are one of their own" not "idols you need to buy a ticket to shake hands with." The 48 Group model, by contrast, generates revenue from a fanbase that feels spending money is "directly supporting their member." In the Philippines, that relationship had already fractured as far back as the Death SSK. --------------------- [ From 48 to 24 A Number Cut in Half ] As of now, MNL48 has 24 active members across 5 generations (latest data as of May 2026). Even as the official website remains partially updated, and Abby no longer serves as the group's Shihainin. The currently active members are: Gen 1 Andi, Dana Gen 2 Jamie, Cole Gen 3 Charm, CJ, Kath, Klaryle, Rachel, Rianna Gen 4 Chelle, Line, Yana Gen 5 (11 members the largest generation) Angel, Elys, Maj, Max, Mirai, Miyaka, Renee, Rhed, Riri, Sakura, Sarina Gen 5, who only just arrived, has become the largest generation in the group today. The group is now relying on those who just arrived to carry what those who stayed long have been holding together. --------------------- [ Closing ] The 48 Group model has proven that it can grow and thrive outside Japan. if those who adopt it know how to adapt it to the context of their own country. For MNL48, regardless of whether this Reboot succeeds, the most important thing the group needs to reclaim is the faith of fans who have started to question where exactly the group's future sits within the world of the 48 Group.
