#DhivehiArchives Today, April 12, through memory and history On April 12, 1966, Prime Minister Ibrahim Nasir arrived at Hulhule (today’s Velana International Airport) aboard an Air Ceylon Hawker Siddeley HS-748 aircraft. This marked the formal opening of the first civil airport in the Maldives. Accompanying the Prime Minister were Abdul Sattar Moosa Didi, the Maldivian Ambassador in Colombo, and Koli Ali Maniku, the Maldivian Government Trade Representative. The flight had departed from Ratmalana Airport in Colombo and touched down in Hulhule at 15:45 hours. Following a simple yet significant ceremony, Prime Minister Ibrahim Nasir officially declared the airport open. The entire airport had been constructed by the Maldivian people themselves. On the same day, a new government body, The Airport Office, was established to manage the operations of the newly opened airport.
