Just learned that in WWI we used wireless technology to communicate from air to ground—two-way telegraph. This footage demonstrates a 12-inch Mk I railway howitzer of 89th Siege Battery RGA at Dickebusch, BE in June 1916 being directed from the air with the help of morse code.👀

In April 1942 the Air Force configured a Douglas A-20A Havoc to demonstrate two 1,000-lb-thrust liquid-propellant JATO units mounted in the engine nacelles for shorter takeoff runs and improved performance. The A-20A completed 44 successful firings with no stability or control issues.👀

Early aviation tech is fascinating to me. Here we have some interesting WWI era footage of the 94th Aero Squadron, led by Ace Eddie Rickenbacker, showing off 3 different types of guns in Apremont, Ardennes, France, on Oct. 29, 1918. First, the Marlin M1917 gun appears being mounted to the Mechanical Synchronizer in front of the cockpit that allowed guns to fire past propellers. Then comes a look at the Vickers Model 1918 being test fired (with prop sync connected) on a Salmson 2 and another aircraft, complete with a shot of Rickenbacker himself. Finally, gunners proudly showing off their single and twin-mounted Lewis guns. 🫡
