i just don’t understand the accent discourse if ur from london, people speak mle bc of the area they’re from not bc of their race. i argue it’s actually anti black to associate that accent to just black people because there’s the implication that we can’t speak any other way???

@zeeuntitled that was never my argument whether it’s black or not??? it’s simple not just black peolle who speak it n it’s highly influenced by the area you live in

@ilhanelle ofc, but that doesn't make it black or not, culture just doesn't exist in a vacuum. it not being ur personal experience of blackness or other people partaking in it doesn't make it any less black british in origin + majority

well it is still a black accent, there can be multiple black accents and ppl might not have that particular one. it's not anti-black to associate them with where they started

@ilhanelle i mean this isn't an opinion to disagree or agree on, the windrush gen are the specific cited origin of what people mean when they refer to mle. there are public articles and essays on this lol

@ilhanelle if they have an offshoot rooted in mle, then it is still rooted in black dialect, slang and accents. mle is literally used interchangeably with bbe, which is why ppl pick a problem with the term in the first place. it doesn't become any less black when other ppl do it

MLE accent varies as well. Someone from Ilford with an MLE accent doesn’t sound like someone from Tottenham with an MLE accent. One has a South Asian twang, the other has a Jamaican twang
