I wrote an article exploring Japanese syncretism, shamanism, sacred geography and how they are related to Touhou. Essentially an attempt at situating Touhou in the "spiritual landscape" of Japan. Turns out Touhou has certain shamanic qualities in itself. Link in comments.

There was a study done on this very topic. What they found is that women from all over the world - from Papua to Greenland to France to Japan ALL flirted with the same technique. First they look at you kind of sidewise. Then they look away. Then they look back to see if you're looking. Women do not necessarily know they're doing it - this is hard-wired into the species. The scientists doing the study opined that this behavior might be part of the reason that we didn't really interbreed all that much with Neanderthals - their women didn't "flirt right". Now that we've found that almost all cases of Neanderthal/Human hybrids didn't include Neanderthal women, it makes even more sense.
